The Instrumentation and Controls Department provides expertise in measurement systems solutions from steady state to dynamic data acquisition including hardware integration, signal conditioning design, and uncertainty analyses. We are an experienced supplier of test facility controls, PLC and HMI programming, and specialised control algorithm solutions. Our engineers will provide you a complete end to end solution from design to risk analysis to testing, installation, calibration, and commissioning.

Capabilities include:

  • PLC programming

    MDS is an experienced supplier of facility control systems for test cells and plants working with everything from engine fuel delivery systems to palletising robots. We use a standardised approach in our programming to make for efficient design, ease of logic maintenance, and intuitive feel. Our engineers are well versed in RSLogix5 and 500, GE Fanuc VersaPro, and Logic Master to name a few, and will also work with confidence to any customer supplied preferences.

  • HMI programming

    MDS has developed a standardised HMI look and feel customisable to each customer’s requirements. The HMI meets CE requirements for user interfaces and contains many features to provide a simple yet effective operator station. Standard features include an alarm logging window and storage, menu structure, PID and calibration windows, channel identification information, and many others. MDS is very experienced with HMI programs such as GE Fanuc Quick Designer, Wonderware Intouch, Intellusion, and HMI panels such as Data Panel, QuickPanel and Panelmate and others, any of which can be tailored according to the customer’s needs.

  • Control algorithm development

    The Controls Group provides solutions for your more sophisticated controls needs. Past projects include a valve control system for an aero engine compressor test facility, a moment inducing rig for a turboshaft engine, a continuously variable transmission test rig, and others. Our controls engineers will work closely with our other engineering groups to optimise the up front design to achieve your control needs.

  • Measurement uncertainty analysis

    The Instrumentation Group works with you to select the right transducers and signal conditioning including theoretical evaluations of measurement uncertainty as required. It is important to have a knowledgeable and capable design team on your side who can help you determine your measurement needs with confidence and characterise your data.

  • Signal conditioning and design

    Our engineers will provide you with a complete integrated measurement solution. Our primary focus is on Commercially available Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment but can also develop custom signal conditioning solutions to suit your needs.

  • Facility interface designs

    As part of our complete integrated and turnkey facility design capability, our engineers provide the necessary expertise to produce low voltage single line diagrams for power distribution, wall penetrations, wireway layout, facility sensors, and lighting control just as some examples.

  • Logic design / diagrams

    Our logic design follows a well documented and reviewed process. Logic representation can be provided as a point by point description, flowchart, or diagrammatical chart to augment the accompanying system schematics.

  • System and failure analysis

    Part of our design process requires our engineers to evaluate failure modes, risks, and mitigation strategies. This process can be applied to any system or design.

  • Cable harness design

    Our cables are designed using ACAD and assembled in house and commissioned in the field so our designers know what makes a good harness. Cables can be assembled from a system schematic or cable assembly drawing and even nailboard design if required. Cable types are manufactured to a one time installation or multi-use reconnection or dress kit standard.

  • Power generation and loading systems control

    Many test facilities require a large motor to power a system or a way of mechanically or electrically loading the equipment under test. MDS integrates the supply of large prime mover motors for those projects requiring power input such as fan or compressor type test facilities. Loading is performed in conjunction with the mechanical engineering group for dynamometer type loads, or electrical through a combination of generators and resistive loadbanks.

  • Communication systems

    Our total facility system integration will deliver intercom and cctv systems for all test facility environments.

  • Emergency protection devices

    Of primary concern in any facility, test or otherwise, is the protection of personnel and equipment. Our integrated design team provides a complete emergency stop and shutdown solution to minimise chance of injury or damage.

  • Feasibility studies and reports

    The Instrumentation and Controls groups can create engineering specifications and feasibility studies for your testing and facility needs.

  • Calibration services

    Our highly experienced team of engineers and technicians can assist you in finding the right calibration solution. In addition to calibration delivery at commissioning using the sophisticated proDAS utilities, MDS can provide one stop shopping follow on maintenance and calibration services for your facility.
